CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) is India's national-level law entrance exam conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) for admission to undergraduate (BA LLB) and postgraduate (LLM) programmes at 25 National Law Universities and 60+ affiliated law colleges across India.

A strong CLAT score opens pathways to careers in corporate law, litigation, judiciary, civil services, public policy, business, and international organisations. CLAT is widely regarded as one of the most competitive entrance exams in India after Class 12, with over 60,000 candidates appearing each year for approximately 4,100 UG seats.

The CLAT 2027 UG exam pattern consists of 120 multiple-choice, comprehension-based questions to be answered in 2 hours. Each correct answer carries 1 mark, with a negative marking of 0.25 marks per incorrect answer. The exam is conducted in offline (pen-and-paper) mode by the Consortium of NLUs.

Section-wise question distribution for CLAT 2027 UG:

  • English Language: approximately 22-26 questions (18-22% weightage)
  • Current Affairs & General Knowledge: approximately 28-32 questions (25% weightage)
  • Legal Reasoning: approximately 28-32 questions (25% weightage)
  • Logical Reasoning: approximately 22-26 questions (20% weightage)
  • Quantitative Techniques: approximately 10-14 questions (10% weightage)

The CLAT 2027 syllabus is comprehension-based across five sections: English Language, Current Affairs & General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Techniques. Questions are passage-based and test reasoning and application rather than rote learning. The Consortium of NLUs does not publish a textbook-style syllabus.

Section-wise focus areas as per the official CLAT 2027 notification:

  • English Language: reading comprehension, inference, vocabulary in context, tone, and argument analysis from 450-word passages
  • Current Affairs & GK: national and international events from the previous 12 months, landmark Supreme Court judgments, awards, government policies, sports, economy, and historical context
  • Legal Reasoning: application of legal principles and rules to fact patterns - no prior knowledge of law required
  • Logical Reasoning: arguments, assumptions, inference, syllogisms, analogies, and critical reasoning
  • Quantitative Techniques: data interpretation, percentages, ratios, averages, and basic algebra at Class 8-10 level

CLAT 2027 was conducted on Sunday, December 7, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM in offline pen-and-paper mode at 130+ test cities across India. The Consortium of National Law Universities officially announced the date through a press release on July 20, 2025.

CLAT 2027 is expected to be held in early December 2027, with registration likely to open in July or August 2026. Always check the official Consortium of NLUs website at consortiumofnlus.ac.in for the most current and accurate dates.

  • AILET (All India Law Entrance Test for NLU Delhi)
  • SLAT (Symbiosis Law Admission Test)
  • LNAT-India (Law National Aptitude Test)
  • CUET Law
  • MH-CET Law (Maharashtra Common Entrance Test)
  • Other state and university-level law entrance exams.

CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) is accepted by 25 National Law Universities and 60+ other law colleges, while AILET (All India Law Entrance Test) is conducted exclusively by National Law University Delhi for admission to its own UG and PG law programmes. Aspirants targeting NLU Delhi must take AILET separately, as CLAT scores are not accepted there.

Both exams test similar skills – English, Logical Reasoning, Current Affairs - so CLAT preparation also covers AILET preparation. Most serious law aspirants attempt both exams to maximise their chances.

To be eligible for CLAT 2027 UG, candidates must have passed (or be appearing in) Class 12 or equivalent examination with a minimum of 45% marks for General/OBC/PwD/NRI categories, and 40% for SC/ST candidates. The Consortium of NLUs has set no upper age limit for CLAT 2027.

Key eligibility requirements at a glance:

  • Educational qualification: 10+2 or equivalent from a recognised board
  • Minimum marks: 45% (General/OBC/PwD/NRI), 40% (SC/ST)
  • Age limit: no upper age limit set by the Consortium; individual NLUs may have policies.
  • Nationality: Indian citizens, NRI, NRI-sponsored, OCI, and Foreign Nationals are eligible
  • Class 11 students: not eligible; candidates must be in Class 12 or have completed it

Candidates appearing in Class 12 in March-April 2027 are eligible to appear for CLAT 2027 expected to be conducted in December 2026 . However, the Class 12 marksheet must be produced at the time of admission, failing which the seat will be forfeited.

There is no limit on the number of CLAT attempts. Candidates can appear for CLAT as many times as they wish, provided they meet the eligibility criteria each year. Many top CLAT rankers attempt the exam in their gap year after Class 12 to maximise their score and secure admission to top NLUs.

CLAT 2027 applications are submitted online through the official Consortium of NLUs website at consortiumofnlus.ac.in. The application fee for CLAT 2027 is INR 4,000 for General, OBC, PwD, NRI, PIO, and OCI candidates, and INR 3,500 for SC, ST, and BPL candidates.

CLAT 2027 application process:

  • Register on the official Consortium of NLUs website with a valid email ID and mobile number
  • Verify the OTP and log in to complete the application
  • Fill in personal details, academic qualifications, category, and parent/guardian information

  • Select preferred test cities (up to 3 in order of preference)

The ideal time to start CLAT preparation is in Class 11 or early Class 12, giving aspirants 12-18 months to build reading habits, reasoning skills, current affairs knowledge, and exam temperament. A focused one-year preparation plan starting in Class 12 also delivers excellent results with the right guidance and consistent practice.

CLATPREP offers preparation programmes tailored for different starting points:

  • Two-year foundation programme: for Class 11 students with comprehensive coverage of all sections
  • One-year intensive programme: for Class 12 students focused on rapid skill-building and mock practice
  • Crash course: for late starters and droppers with a focus on revision and test strategy
  • Dropper or gap-year programme: for students preparing exclusively for CLAT after Class 12

No, prior legal knowledge is not required to prepare for or crack CLAT. The Legal Reasoning section tests reading comprehension, logical thinking, and the application of given legal principles to factual situations. The Consortium of NLUs designed the exam to be accessible to students from all academic streams without prior law exposure.

The Legal Reasoning section of CLAT 2027 evaluates:

  • Reading comprehension of about 350-450-word legal passages
  • Application of given principles to factual situations
  • Logical analysis and inference
  • Elimination of incorrect options

Students do not need to memorise legal sections, case law, or technical terminology. CLATPREP teaches legal concepts from scratch, including how to read and understand legal passages effectively along with CLAT-specific reasoning techniques, and elimination strategies. Students from Science, Commerce, and Humanities streams consistently perform well in CLAT with structured preparation.

The Quantitative Techniques section in CLAT is based on elementary mathematics at Class 8-10 level and is generally not considered conceptually difficult. The section contains approximately 10-14 questions and focuses on data interpretation, percentages, ratios, averages, and basic algebra. Students typically lose marks due to time pressure rather than conceptual difficulty.

CLATPREP's preparation strategy for Quantitative Techniques covers:

  • Basic concept clarity in arithmetic and algebra
  • Fast calculation techniques and shortcuts
  • Data interpretation from tables, charts, and graphs
  • Sectional timed tests and accuracy practice
  • Question selection strategy to maximise marks within the time limit

Even students who consider themselves weak in mathematics regularly score well in this section with consistent practice over 4-6 months.

Current Affairs and General Knowledge is one of the highest-weightage and most rank-deciding sections in CLAT 2027, contributing approximately 28-32 questions out of 120. Questions are entirely passage-based and test understanding of national and international events, landmark Supreme Court judgments, government policies, awards, sports, and economic developments.

Key focus areas for CLAT 2027 Current Affairs preparation:

  • National events from December 2025 to November 2026
  • International affairs including UN, G20, BRICS, and major bilateral developments
  • Landmark Supreme Court and High Court judgments
  • Union Budget, economic policies, and RBI announcements
  • Awards, honours, sports tournaments, and cultural events
  • Government schemes and major policy launches

CLATPREP students receive comprehensive and thorough information via daily current affairs updates, monthly compendiums, weekly revision classes, GK quizzes, and exam-pattern analysis of trending topics throughout the preparation cycle.

The most recommended sources for CLAT 2027 preparation include 'Word Power Made Easy' by Norman Lewis for English, and the official CLAT sample papers released by the Consortium of NLUs. Daily newspapers such as The Hindu and Indian Express are essential for Current Affairs. NCERT Mathematics Class 8-10 and Legal Studies 11th and 12th.

CLAT preparation can be effectively balanced with Class 12 board exams using 1.5 to 2 hours of focused daily study. CLAT tests reading, reasoning, current affairs, and basic mathematics - skills that complement rather than compete with school studies. Many CLAT toppers have simultaneously scored 90%+ in Class 12 board exams through structured preparation.

CLATPREP supports this balance through:

  • Structured study schedules aligned with school calendars
  • Weekend and evening batches for Class 12 students
  • Short, focused daily practice routines
  • Board-friendly preparation plans with reduced workload during pre-board months
  • Recorded lectures for flexible revision
  • Time-management and exam-strategy coaching

Regular reading, practicing analytical puzzles, and current affairs practice often improve overall comprehension and confidence in school academics as well.

CLATPREP prepares students for all major law entrance examinations in India, including CLAT (Common Law Admission Test), AILET (All India Law Entrance Test for NLU Delhi), SLAT (Symbiosis Law Admission Test), LNAT-India (Law National Aptitude Test), MH-CET Law (Maharashtra Common Entrance Test), CUET Law, and other state and university-level law entrance exams.

CLATPREP programmes are designed for the following aspirant categories:

  • Class 11 students starting a 2-year foundation programme
  • Class 12 students on a 1-year intensive programme
  • Droppers and gap-year aspirants on a dedicated CLAT preparation track
  • Repeaters seeking targeted improvement in specific sections
